Transport for Australia has revealed its latest transport cost index for 2018, which found the cheapest car transport companies in Australia are still Amazon, Uber, and Car2go.
While Uber is facing a $4.5 billion class action lawsuit, Amazon, which launched in 2016, has faced the biggest financial hit from its Australian launch.
Amazon is currently facing an $8 billion class actions lawsuit in Australia.
The index shows Amazon, AmazonFresh, and Amazon Prime to be the cheapest transport companies on the market.
They were the only two companies to see their costs drop in 2018.
“While some of these companies have seen their costs rise significantly, many have also seen costs fall over time,” the index said.
Amazon’s cheapest car travel in 2018 was the $22.90 one-way ride from Melbourne Airport to Perth.
The cheapest one-ways travel to Sydney was $21.90.
Uber’s cheapest one way car travel to Melbourne was $25.90, while Car2Go’s cheapest in 2018, a $15.90 trip from Melbourne to Perth, was $29.90 ($20.90 if you add GST).
Amazon’s cheapest three-day trip to Sydney is $35.90 with a $10.90 taxi ride.
AmazonFresh’s cheapest trips were to Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra, with the cheapest two-day trips to Canberra and Melbourne $36.90 and $36, respectively.
The biggest costs dropped off Amazon’s lowest cost car travel was the cheapest three day Uber trip from Sydney to Melbourne.
The lowest cost Uber trip to Perth was $22, while the cheapest one day Uber from Perth to Melbourne cost $19.
The biggest drop in the cheapest Uber car trip to Canberra was from $22 to $16 ($16 for the taxi ride).
AmazonFresh and AmazonFreshFreshFresh delivery drivers were among the most expensive.
Amazon Fresh delivery drivers charged an average of $26.20, while AmazonFresh Fresh delivery driver, and car transport consultant, Simon Williams charged $22 per delivery, $14.50 per day, and $13.60 per hour.
Uber drivers charged $25 per delivery and $25 an hour.
The average car transport fee was $27.70 per week for Uber and $35 for AmazonFresh.
While Amazon and Uber have been at the forefront of the debate on driver pay, Amazon has also been on the receiving end of many class action lawsuits.
In the last year, Amazon’s driver compensation has risen from $15 per hour to $25 and the company has been forced to suspend some drivers who were not paying their wages.
In the wake of this recent legal drama, Amazon is preparing to announce a range of changes to driver compensation, including increasing the hourly rate to $10 per hour and requiring all new drivers to sign a form of driver agreement.
AmazonFresh and Uber drivers are still at the heart of the current driver compensation debate, with both companies having faced legal battles over their pay practices.
Amazon was sued in the US and has been ordered to pay $50 million in back wages and penalties to over 50,000 drivers, while Uber has faced numerous class action suits, with a combined total of over 100 million claims.
The companies face a number of legal challenges from the legal community in Australia, including the claim that they are “unfairly discriminating” against drivers, and the claim by Uber drivers that they were unfairly treated in Australia when compared to drivers in the United States.
The new index shows Uber drivers’ wages are the lowest in Australia but still more than the average cost of driving in Australia ($28.70), compared to the average for Australia ($22.00).
While AmazonFresh drivers’ salaries are also lower than the Australian average, the difference is much smaller than in Australia’s other major car transport market, the US.
Amazon drivers earn $33.70, while drivers in Australia earn $26, but the average is $28.30.
The index shows that in 2018 AmazonFresh had the lowest cost per kilometre of any Australian car, but its drivers were still earning the highest average costs of any major car transportation company.
