With a new bike lane built over a busy stretch of the Yarra River, Melbourne’s transport department is planning to start a bike ride across the Yarras next month.

Melbourne’s transport chief says the cycle track is the perfect place to get around Melbourne’s busy roads and the city’s rivers, and it will be one of the first to get the new route built.

“This project will take a lot of time and we want to get it completed as soon as possible,” said Transport Minister Andrew Constance.

It will cost about $1.4 million to build and it is expected to open in 2019.

Mr Constance said the bike lane would be part of the existing cycle route across the river, known as the Yarraloola, and would allow cyclists to cycle along the edge of the river and on to the main road.

The bike lane will be built between Yarralool Road and Westwood Street, where traffic is currently light.

While the bike path will provide a safer route for cyclists and pedestrians, Mr Constance admitted that there were still some challenges ahead.

Victoria’s cycling network is currently the worst in Australia, with more than 4 million people on the road every day, he said.

He said he was confident the bike track would be the best way to encourage more people to take up cycling.

Cycling in Melbourne is not as popular as it used to be, but Mr Constence said he hoped the new bike path would help people enjoy cycling more.

“I think the best compliment I can give is not to say how much your programs have taught me (a ton), but how much Marketplace has motivated me to go out and teach myself,” he said, adding that his favourite quote was from Martin Luther King Jr: “When I talk about you, I mean it.”
